Brown University hosted its inaugural National Labs Day on April 19, 2024, a landmark event designed to bridge the gap between academic innovation and the vast resources of the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Laboratories

The conference brought together nearly 100 Brown faculty and students with scientists from seven major federal facilities—including Oak Ridge, Brookhaven, and Lawrence Livermore—to foster collaborations in high-impact areas like quantum materials, computational modeling, and next-generation energy solutions. By highlighting existing breakthroughs in solar cells and dark matter detection, the initiative aims to translate sophisticated research into real-world technologies that address global challenges.

From National Labs Day to Strategic Partnership

National Labs Day 2024 served as a critical launchpad for Brown’s deepening relationship with the federal research ecosystem. What began as a day of networking and facility tours has since evolved into a formal institutional alliance.

  • April 2024: Brookhaven scientists attend Brown's inaugural National Labs Day
  • December 2024: Brown's then-Interim Vice President for Research Greg Hirth led a team of 11 to Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) in Upton, New York to explore its cutting-edge research and facilities.
  • June 2025: Brown University and Brookhaven National Laboratory signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), the first of its kind between Brown and its closest national lab—formalizing collaborative research in high-priority areas like AI, quantum science, and materials science.
  • Present: The partnership now facilitates joint appointments, specialized access to the National Synchrotron Light Source II, and dedicated internship pipelines for Brown students.

This evolution from a single event to a long-term strategic alliance exemplifies the goal of National Labs Day: moving beyond introductions to create sustainable, world-class research infrastructure.
