Conduct Research

Fulfill funding requirements and navigate regulatory compliance and ethical guidelines for work involving human subjects, animal care, export controls, data management, international collaborations and other regulated activities.

The Division of Research helps researchers navigate regulatory compliance and ethical guidelines for work involving human subjects, animal care, export controls, data management, international collaborations and other activities. Staff members assist with negotiating and managing contracts and ensure researchers have access to all the necessary tools, systems and training to achieve their goals and fulfill funding requirements.

Manage a Contract or Agreement

Work with Brown’s Research Agreements and Contracting team to draft, negotiate and manage contracts and agreements in support of your research, including agreements for material transfer, data use and other activities.

Manage Research Involving Human Subjects

Understand the roles of Brown’s review boards; consider policies and guidance around consent, recruitment, compensation, safety, confidentiality, training and mandatory reporting; and know the process for preparing and submitting a study.

Manage Research Involving Animals

Understand the role of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC), know the roles and responsibilities of all individuals involved in the work, review related Brown policies and directives, and understand how to submit a protocol.

Manage Research Data

Read University and federal policies regarding the safe and secure management of research data; review Brown’s data risk classifications; and explore a variety of data resources and repositories available to researchers at Brown.

Manage International Research Activities

Prepare for international travel; shipment or transfer of controlled items, software, technology or services; and collaboration with other researchers and institutions by reviewing federal laws and regulations and Brown University policies and guidance.

Promote Ethical Research

Review and apply Brown’s policies around authorship, misconduct and conflict of interest and other ethical considerations when conducting research, including how to complete Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) training.

Brown Centers of Research

The CoresRI directory catalogs instruments (specific makes, models, and uses), services, resources, locations, and contact personnel. Through the directory, researchers can easily search for instruments and services and directly link to the core facility’s website for more detailed information.
Brown excels at education and research that integrate knowledge across diverse fields of study — a robust network of academic institutes and centers is at the heart of that work.
