Review and Regulatory Boards
The Institutional Review Board (IRB) at Brown is an independent committee of scientists, nonscientists and members unaffiliated with Brown and appointed by the Vice President for Research. The IRB was established to protect the rights and welfare of human subjects recruited to participate in biomedical or social/behavioral research conducted by Brown researchers.
The Brown University Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) is composed of faculty, veterinarians, staff, and community members appointed by the Deputy Vice President for Research to oversee the ethical and compliant use of live vertebrate animals and cephalopods in research. All such activities conducted must receive prior approval from the IACUC.
Brown’s Conflict of Interest Review Board (COIRB) works in conjunction with the Research Integrity team to administer and manage the conflict of interest review process for faculty and researchers.
Brown University's Embryonic Stem Cell Research Oversight (ESCRO) Committee ensures that any Brown human embryonic stem cell (hESC) research is conducted only after full consideration of all relevant scientific, medical, regulatory and ethical issues, including compliance with Rhode Island statutes.
