Review and Regulatory Boards

The review and regulatory boards within Brown University’s Division of Research provide ethical oversight, guidance and support to Brown researchers; ensure compliance with regulations and standards; monitor quality assurance of research processes and policies; and enable feedback and effective communications between investigators and research administrators within the University.

The Institutional Review Board (IRB) at Brown is an independent committee of scientists, nonscientists and members unaffiliated with Brown and appointed by the Vice President for Research. The IRB was established to protect the rights and welfare of human subjects recruited to participate in biomedical or social/behavioral research conducted by Brown researchers.
The Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) is a group of faculty, veterinarians, staff and community members appointed by the Vice President of Research to evaluate and oversee animal use in research at Brown University. All research involving the use of live vertebrate animals must receive prior approval by the IACUC.
Brown’s Conflict of Interest Review Board (COIRB) works in conjunction with the Research Integrity team to administer and manage the conflict of interest review process for faculty and researchers.
Brown University's Embryonic Stem Cell Research Oversight (ESCRO) Committee ensures that any Brown human embryonic stem cell (hESC) research is conducted only after full consideration of all relevant scientific, medical, regulatory and ethical issues, including compliance with Rhode Island statutes.
