Research Seed Awards

Brown University’s Research Seed Awards help faculty develop more competitive research proposals by supporting the generation of preliminary data, pursuing new directions or collaborations in research, and other endeavors.

Apply for Seed Award Funding

  • Researchers can apply in the fall for Seed Award funding via UFunds.
  • Research Seed Award recipients are expected to submit a competitive proposal for a sizable project to an external funding organization within a year of the completion of the seed funding period.

What to Include in a Seed Award Proposal

  • Identify the program(s) and agencies to which future proposals will be submitted.
  • Describe the research project in language understandable to faculty reviewers.
  • Explain how the Research Seed Award activity will result in a more competitive proposal. 
  • Include a budget for the award and a timeline for submission to an external funding organization.

Full proposal due Monday, October 28, 2024, 12 p.m. (noon) via UFunds  (competition will open in UFunds by 9/27/24).

  • Category 1 Award: up to $50,000 for proposals with a single PI. 
  • Category 2 Award:  up to $100,000 for a group of two or more PIs from distinctly different disciplines who are initiating a collaboration with the goal to establish an ongoing, long-term connection across disciplines that is expected to lead to substantial external research funding through multi-investigator or center types of grants.

Helpful materials for Seed Award applicants and recipients

All Seed Award applicants must make a copy of and complete the Budget Worksheet and Justification document and share the link in UFunds as part of their internal application materials.
Previous Seed Award recipients can proactively report funded research grants that resulted from Division of Research support using the provided short form. The Division also surveys Seed awardees annually.
Recipients of internal funding awards from the Division of Research must submit a final report within 60 days of the award ending. Recipients may also use this form to request a one-time, one-year extension.
The Faculty Research Travel Fund, managed through the Office of the Dean of the Faculty, is available to voting members of the Brown campus-based faculty for assistance in meeting the cost of professional travel during any fiscal (budget) year.
