Building on the success of last year’s proposal development workshop, which drew 175 faculty members from across the University, the Research Strategy and Development team and our partners are pleased to welcome back Drs. Peg AtKisson and Amanda Welch of the AtKisson Training Group to host this year's workshop, Adapting Research Funding and Leadership Strategies for 2026, focusing specifically on the challenges of the 2026 funding landscape.
This event features two distinct workshops from March 11-12 designed for faculty at any career stage pursuing research proposals across the biological sciences, social sciences, public health, engineering, physical sciences, and humanities. Faculty are welcome to attend either or both workshops.
Day 1 Workshop: Cultivating and Funding Your Research: Adapting to the Changing Landscape (Full day, in person only)
Wednesday, March 11 (9 a.m. - 5 p.m.)
Adapting to today’s research landscape requires strategic cultivation of your research program. By viewing your program as an ecosystem—encompassing interactions among projects—you can better prioritize work, identify new funding opportunities, and plan your next grant proposal. This full-day workshop provides practical tools and guidance to visualize, position, and write a clear, compelling grant proposal.
The workshop blends lectures with interactive activities and covers a range of funding targets. Participants will learn concrete strategies for program visualization, decision-making, and proposal writing, supported by actionable tips and adaptable frameworks applicable across research environments.
Part 1: Cultivating Your Research
Part 2: The Critical First Page of the Proposal
Part 3: The Body of the Proposal
Part 4: All the Finishing Touches
Day 2 Workshop: Research Leadership and Management (Half day, in person only)
Thursday, March 12 (1-5 p.m.)
As the research landscape shifts, strong science depends on effective teams. This intensive half-day workshop equips scientists with essential leadership and people-management skills through interactive exercises focused on setting expectations, giving feedback, motivating teams, and aligning around a shared vision.
