As we approach summer, I would like to highlight a series of events and resources offered by the offices of Research Strategy and Development (RSD), Corporate and Foundation Relations (CFR), and Brown Technology Innovations (BTI). These offices will continue to support faculty research over the coming months.
Mark your calendars!
Division of Research Pop-up Office Hours, June 18, 11 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.
This summer, the Vice President for Research will hold office hours to help faculty address some of their most pressing questions. The first of this series will address the NIH’s recent announcement about terminated funding for foreign sub-components for existing awards. Please register for this session or to be notified of future office hours.
Foundation Funding Workshop at the Center for Global Health Equity: Opening the black box of foundation funding, June 26, 12 - 1:30 p.m.
In this workshop, CFR and RSD will cover the key differences between applying for foundation funding and writing federal proposals. They will also provide specific resources to help you identify foundation opportunities. There will also be a live demonstration of Brown's new grant finding platform, Pivot. This training is open to BioMed faculty and researchers working in the field of global health. This will be a hybrid presentation. For more information, please contact Alison Buckser, CFR Director, at alison_buckser@brown.edu. | Register
Foundation Funding Workshop for Faculty in the Physical Sciences and CoPsy, July 9, 11 a.m. - 12 p.m.
The Dean of the Faculty and CFR will host a one-hour Zoom workshop focused on foundation fundraising. This session is open to faculty in Applied Math, Chemistry, CoPsy, CS, Data Science, DEEPS, Mathematics, and Physics. During the workshop, Suresh Venkatasubramanian, professor of data science and computer science, will share his experiences partnering with foundation funders to launch the Center for Technological Responsibility, Reimagination and Redesign (CNTR). Staff from CFR and RSD will discuss resources for identifying private funding opportunities, building relationships with funders, and making a winning case for foundation support. Ongoing Support
Alternate Funding Avenues
The Research Strategy and Development team continues to offer curated funding opportunities through Pivot. New this week is the curated list of Funding to Mitigate Research Disruptions, which offers sponsored research opportunities that provide funding to bridge gaps or sustain activity in research topic areas targeted for cancellation. We recommend bookmarking this page, as it will be updated regularly with opportunities that are expected to have quick turnaround times.
In addition, RSD has developed two primers for Department of Defense (DoD) funding. One primer is specifically designed for faculty who have traditionally worked with NIH but are now exploring DoD funding opportunities. The other primer provides a general overview of working with DoD. As always, the RSD team (orsd@brown.edu) is available to answer any questions you may have.
Industry Engagement
The Brown Technology Innovations group continues to support faculty research efforts with our recent panel, Demystifying Industry Partnerships: Best Practices for Sponsored Research. We had over 100 attendees! We appreciate your participation and questions.
As we navigate a rapidly evolving federal landscape, it is clear that diversifying funding portfolios has become even more critical. Faculty entering into a research arrangement with a company generally involves these three broad steps:
- Setting up a statement of work
- Determining a budget
- Negotiating and executing a sponsored research agreement
In all these areas, BTI can provide guidance and help. Contact tech-innovations@brown.edu to connect with a team member.
We encourage faculty to participate in these activities. If you would like to see any of our offices provide additional information or support, please contact us.
