Division of Research

Research Achievement Awards

The Division of Research recognizes the outstanding research achievements of Brown faculty through the Research Achievement Awards program. Awards are made annually or every two years, depending on the award type, each totaling $5,000.

About Research Achievement Awards

  • The Division of Research invites nominations from deans, department chairs and center directors, and also invites self-nominations and nominations by colleagues. A committee of faculty reviews nominations and selects the award recipients.
  • Research Achievement awardees are honored at a University-wide research celebration in the spring, along with recipients of Research Seed Awards and Richard B. Salomon Faculty Research Awards.
  • Each award carries a research award of $5,000.
  • Contact research_opps@brown.edu with any questions about the Research Achievement Awards.

Selection Criteria and Nomination Materials

The overall merit of the research achievement is considered and evaluated by a committee of faculty reviewers, convened by the vice president for research each year to avoid direct conflicts of interest with respect to nominees. The final selection is made based on the individual’s scholarly achievements and recognitions (publications, professional awards, funded research, etc.) and the significance of the individual’s contributions to their discipline.

Deans, department chairs and center directors, as well as colleagues and the individuals themselves, may submit nominations for the Research Achievement Awards.

Nomination materials including the following:

  • One-page letter of nomination from the dean, department chair, center director, Brown faculty colleague or nominee addressing evidence and significance of the candidate's research achievements
  • One-page supporting letter from a faculty colleague
  • Candidate’s current curriculum vitae
