Offered annually, Early Career Research Achievement Awards recognize faculty members with an exemplary portfolio of research achievement during their first years at Brown. The awards are given in four areas: 

• Humanities and Social Sciences
• Physical Sciences
• Life Sciences and Public Health
• Hospital-Based Research Faculty

Faculty eligible to receive an Early Career Award in the current award cycle include:

• Faculty at the rank of assistant professor
• Faculty at the rank of associate professor (promoted within the current fiscal year)

Adjunct and visiting faculty are not eligible for this award.

Criteria

The overall merit of the research achievement will be considered and evaluated by a committee of faculty reviewers, convened by the Vice President for Research. The final selection will be made based on the following criteria:

• Scholarly achievements and recognition (publications, professional awards, funded research etc.).
• Significance of contributions to the discipline

Mid-Career Research Achievement Awards recognize faculty at the mid-career stage who have demonstrated outstanding research achievements. The award is offered every other year and alternates with the Distinguished Research Achievement Award. Mid-Career Awards are given in four areas: 

• Humanities and Social Sciences
• Physical Sciences
• Life Sciences and Public Health
• Hospital-Based Research Faculty

Faculty eligible to receive a Mid-Career Award in the current award cycle include:

• Faculty at the rank of associate professor (promoted during the previous fiscal year or earlier)
• Faculty at the rank of full professor (promoted within the past five fiscal years)

Adjunct and visiting faculty are not eligible for this award.

Distinguished Research Achievement Awards recognize faculty at the rank of full professor who have demonstrated a record of exceptional research achievements throughout their career at Brown and have received national and/or international peer acclaim for their research within the past few calendar years. Distinguished Research Achievement Awards are offered every other year and alternate with the Mid-Career Research Achievement Award.

Criteria

The  overall merit of the research achievement will be considered and evaluated by a committee of faculty reviewers, convened by the Vice President for Research. The final selection will be made based on the following criteria:

• Scholarly achievements and recognition (publications, professional awards, funded research etc.)
• Significance of contributions to the discipline
• Evidence of national and/or international recognition for their research within the last few calendar years

Consideration will be given to especially distinguished researchers who have also contributed notably to mentorship and university community.
