NIH Other Support Disclosure Requirement

National Institutes of Health (NIH) "Other Support" refers to the information that the NIH requires researchers to provide about their other research support. When submitting NIH proposals, researchers must identify all sources of other support, ensuring that complete and accurate information is disclosed.

LAST UPDATED DECEMBER 5, 2022

The NIH may request information on other active and pending support to ensure there is no scientific budgetary or commitment overlap. This applies to proposals, Just-In-Time documents and Research Performance Progress Reports.

Specifically, NIH requires that Other Support include: “… all resources made available to a researcher in support of and/or related to all of their research endeavors, regardless of whether or not they have monetary value and regardless of whether they are based at the institution the researcher identifies for the current grant.” Training awards, prizes or gifts do not need to be included.

NIH requires electronic signatures on all proposals, including the Other Support section. Note that documents must be flattened before proposal submission, and departments should retain a copy of the "live" signed Other Support.

NIH regularly updates its standard instructions and sample document for Other Support. The agency also updates a Disclosures Table that outlines what information must be disclosed and which section of the proposal is most appropriate for the disclosure.

Updated NIH Biosketch Template

On March 12, 2021, NIH released NOT-OD-21-073, which in addition to changing Other Support introduced a new template and instructions for the Biosketch. Among these changes was an instruction for investigators to include selected awards in their personal statement (Section A), which can be useful to demonstrate funding history to proposal reviewers.

The update also noted that investigators must list in reverse chronological order all current positions and scientific appointments both domestic (e.g., a memorandum of understanding with Veterans Affairs) and foreign, including affiliations with foreign entities or governments. You are not required to list previous positions or other historical information.
