On Thursday, May 7 the NIH released a Guide Notice which announced a temporary suspension of the No Cost Extension (NCE) function in eRA Commons. As you may know, the NIH Grants Policy Statement has historically granted institutions the right to extend grants for up to 12 months beyond the original end date of their project. This Notice supersedes that expanded authority.
Until further notice, all NCEs will need to receive NIH Prior Approval. As such, a UPAS will not be needed, but additional information is required in order for OSP/BMRA to to facilitate these requests in eRA Commons. Please see the steps below for NCE requests:
As with all extensions, Department Administrators or PIs should route an Award Modification Request (AMR) in Huron to request the NCE. The AMR should contain the following information:
- Number of months requested for the extension
- Amount of Unobligated Balance
- Confirmation that PI will maintain measurable effort
- Vertebrate Animals IACUC Approval Date (if applicable)
- The following documents should also be included. Note that PDF Files should not exceed 6MB
- Progress Report
- Budget Document
- Justification For Extension
