Division of Research

Federal notice regarding NIH overhead rate

A message from Vice President for Research Greg Hirth sent to all graduate students, medical students, faculty and staff via Today@Brown on Sunday, Feb. 9.

On behalf of the Division of Research, I am writing regarding the announcement on Friday, Feb. 7, 2025, from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) limiting the indirect cost rate to 15%, effective Feb. 10, 2025.

This 15% cap, according to the NIH notice, "shall be applied to all current grants for go forward expenses from Feb. 10, 2025 forward as well as for all new grants issued." Given the rapidly evolving situation, we ask that you please email us (fed2025admintransition@brown.edu) if you are planning to submit an NIH grant within the next two weeks, so that we can provide updated advice on your submission.

The Division of Research will participate in the Faculty Town Hall on Recent Federal Government Actions being hosted at 4 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 13, by the Office of the Provost and Faculty Executive Committee, where we can answer general questions. Faculty received an invitation via email from the FEC last week, including a link for posing questions in advance.

We remain committed to supporting our research community during this time of ongoing uncertainty, and we will continue to communicate directly with affected individuals as information and updates become available. This and other general announcements from the Division of Research also are being archived for ongoing reference on the News and Announcements page of the Division of Research website.

Working closely with colleagues across the University, we continue to closely track the impact of all new announcements and policy statements from federal agencies that have implications for Brown's research activities.

Sincerely,
Greg Hirth
Vice President for Research
Professor of Earth, Environmental, and Planetary Sciences
