New Multi-Factor Authentication Requirements for Accessing Research.gov
Effective Oct. 27, 2024, the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) is requiring Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) for access to Research.gov. In order to access Research.gov after Oct. 27, you will need to use a Login.gov account bolstered with a 1Password Passkey - a “phish-resistant” form of MFA.
The Office of Information Technology (OIT) has provided a step-by-step guide for creating new Login.gov credentials.
Requesting Roles
NSF accounts have a two-step process for roles (PI, Co-I, Postdoc). If you need a role, you will:
- Register your account in Research.gov, following new MFA requirements. An activation confirmation email will come to you via Research.gov once you log in for the first time.
- Request your needed account role(s) when logged into your account at Research.gov.
